MOAPA  VALLEY

SPRINGING UP ALONG ONE OF THE FEW SMALL RIVERS IN ARID SOUTHERN NEVADA IS THE OASIS OF MOAPA VALLEY.   FIRST SETTLED BY HARDY PIONEERS,  IT IS NOW A RAPIDLY GROWING PART OF THE MOST VIBRANT ECONOMY IN THE WEST.
The valley is approximately 35 miles long and spans Interstate-15.  It is located along the Muddy River tributary of the Colorado River system in the northeastern portion of Clark County.  It stretches 30 miles from the headwaters of the Muddy River to Lake Mead.
Archeological finds indicate that the region was occupied by Indian civilizations from as early as 1000 B.C.  Pueblo occupations of the area began around the time of Christ and spread throughout the Moapa Valley.  They left the area around A.D. 1150 and sometime later theArcheological finds indicate that the region was occupied by Indian civilizations from as early as 1000 B.C.  Pueblo occupations of the area began around the time of Christ and spread throughout the Moapa Valley.  They left the area around A.D. 1150 and sometime later the area was occupied by the Paiutes.
The first permanent white settlers were sent to the area by Mormon president Brigham Young in January 1865.  These settlers organized three towns in the lower valley: St Thomas, Overton and St. Joseph.  Today the towns of Overton and St. Joseph (Logandale) remain.  St. Thomas was covered by the water of Lake Mead in 1938 with the completion of Hoover Dam.
Moapa Valley includes several small communities, bordered on the southeast by Lake Mead and the Valley of Fire State Park and on the northwest by Warm Springs Resort.   Moapa Valley has traditionally been an agricultural area including dairying, ranching and farming.  Most recently it has become a mecca for tourism, retirement and  water recreation. The steady growth of our communities is also directly linked to our ideal location, affording residents a short commute to Las Vegas, St. George, Utah and the color country of Southern Utah.

LOST  CITY  MUSEUM  OF  ARCHAEOLOGY
Lost City Museum, 721 S. Moapa Valley Blvd., located on the south end of Overton.  The first farmers in the Moapa Valley were the Anasazi Indians who lived in the area from the first to the twelfth century A.D. They grew corn, beans, squash and cotton and built permanent dwellings along the entire length of the valley.  On display are pottery, stone tools, jewelry and prehistoric dwellings reconstructed on their original foundations. Ongoing archaeological excavations continue to add information to the understanding of the prehistoric inhabitants of the Moapa Valley.

    VALLEY  OF  FIRE
Valley of Fire State Park is located 8 miles south of Overton and is the Nevada State Park System's first park, established in 1935.  The park derives its name from red sandstone formations, formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs, 150 million years ago.  Colorful as its name, it has been home to many movie sets and  it affords you an opportunity to let your camera work for you with its plentiful and varied sandstone rock formations.  The park includes a visitor's center, picnic and campground facilities.
